In 1995 the Confederate Mining Co. applied for a lease on Federal land to mine for Gold. After many years of studies and huge amounts of paper work the company finally got the lease and mining rights. The Confederate Mining Co. became the first to ever mine Gold on Federal land East of the Mississippi. In 2010 C.M.C. was the only legal operating Gold mine in the state of S.C. The founders of C.M.C. decided to take some of the Gold and strike a Coin. At first it was an experiment just for fun to see if they could. Dies were cut by hand. The Obverse Die has the Palmetto Palm which is the S.C. State Tree. The Obverse also has S.C. on it. The Palmetto Tree design was similar to the early S C Militia Buttons of the early 1800’s .The Reverse Die was designed with a simple CMC stacked, 2010, and a small c mint mark representing the town of Cowpens S C. The striking of the Coins is as primitive as it gets. The blank is hammered out of melted Gold from the Mine. The blank is placed between the two Dies. A holding hammer is placed on top of the Dies and struck with a larger hammer. The 2010 Coins were an instant success, every one that saw them wanted one. The company decided to limit the Gold Coins to only 104 a year. The company also decided to change the die design each year. The 2011 has a different Palmetto design it is similar to the SC dispensary bottles of the 1800’s. The Reverse has crossed picks with the letters CMC it also has 2011 in Roman numerals. The Reverse has the mint mark a small c below the picks that represents the town of Cowpens S.C. the Gold Coins are minted in 10, 20, and a 30 gram Coin. The low mintage of only 104 will make CMC Gold Coins some of the rarest Coins ever minted.
Dies have been cut and striking has started on the Coins for 2012. The 2012 Coins will vary in design on each weight of Coin. The 10 gram Gold Coin will be simular to the S.C. Militia Buttons of the state during the Civil War. The 20 gram Gold is simular to the famous Palmetto Guard button with a Snake around the Palmetto Tree. The 30 gram Gold will have a Palmetto Tree simular to the type found on S.C. Militia belt buckles. The 2012 10,20,and 30 gram design will also be produced in Silver,Silver Alloy ,Copper and some in brass. A new weight and style Coin will be introduced for 2012 it is 4.4 gram in Gold and 3.8 in 999 silver. The obverse has the date in Roman numerals and the Palmetto Tree with S.C. The Reverse has the CMC logo with crossed Picks.
The Confederate Mining Co. produces a more affordable coin in Silver, Silver Alloy,Brass and Copper because of the demand and high cost of gold. The hand striking of these coins will still keep them at a very low mintage number.
The Confederate Mining Co. also produces Copper bars and Lead rounds. The bars and rounds all vary in weight they are hand cast. Each Copper bar and Lead round is marked with the C M C logo. Today and Years from now CMC Coins and bars will be very rare and highly collectable.
The Confederate Mining co. Thanks you for your Time and Great support.
